The Rockwell typeface was created in 1934 by the Monotype foundry's in-house studio, which was led by Frank Hinman Pierpont, a Connecticut engineer and linotype designer who relocated to London. Rockwell is a unique take on a geometric slab serif style that has been popular since its introduction in the 1930s. Rockwell had various distinct qualities when it was first published, including variances in the spacing, letter weight, and small alterations in glyph construction.

Despite this, the Rockwell design is frequently confused for Stymie Bold, not only because of their resemblance but also because the Rockwell typeface was mistakenly referred to as StymieTM Bold in an early Monotype document. Despite the fact that there are minor changes between the two faces, this error can continue to generate confusion.
