Playfair Display font
About this font.
Playfair Display is a serif typeface that is transitional. It was created by typeface designer Claus Eggers Sørensen and released under the Open Font Licence 1.1, which grants free permission to use the typefaces and allows to extend and change the family if needed. The whole source code may be found here.
In 2011, the font was launched. Sørensen, while being relatively new, drew a lot of inspiration from the late-eighteenth-century enlightenment. While it is not a revival of any single design, it draws inspiration from printer and font designer John Baskerville's designs, punchcutter William Martin's typeface for the 'Boydell Shakspeare' (sic) edition and subsequent 'Scotch Roman' designs.
